The Barkley Marathon Legend on Using Sunk Cost Fallacy to Not Quit

BY The Spartan Editors

Almost no one knows pain and triumph like John Kelly, the man who has finished the world’s most unfinishable race, The Barkley Marathon, in first place. Twice. But like any human being putting themselves out there and doing hard things, he’s not invincible – believe it or not.

How does he do it? John relies on the “sunk cost fallacy” to bring him back to life in moments where reaching his goal seems impossible. Think about everything you’ve done to prepare for this moment, and all the time – and likely money – you’ve poured into your expected success: The race is really just the celebration of your sunk cost. Do you really want to waste it all?

“You're going to hit [what seems like rock bottom] a lot, and you're going to have to remember that you can bounce back from that,” Kelly says on The Hard Way podcast. “It’s the lowest points where I’m learning the most about myself. It’s fine. You’re going to be fine.”
